Video Colposcopy Room

A colposcopic examination uses a magnifying instrument called a colposcope to look at the vagina and the cervix. Abnormalities can be seen that might be missed by the naked eye or by a pap smear.

Colposcopic examinations at Belize Medical Associates are done in our Video Colposcopy Room. The patient is placed in the same position as that of a pap smear and the procedure takes about 10- 15 minutes.

The colposcope is placed near the opening of the vagina. Your gynecologist looks through the colposcope at the cervix and vagina. The colposcope has a camera attached, therefore, pictures can be displayed on a video screen for the patient to see while the procedure is being done. The pictures are also saved for a permanent record of the test.

If your colposcopy results are abnormal, then your gynecologist will request a cervical biopsy. Depending on the severity of the abnormal changes, you may need to do a cervical biopsy.

A cervical biopsy removes part of the cervix so that the tissue can be examined by the pathologist. The amount of cervical tissue removed depends on the method used. Under colposcopic guidance, your gynecologist will do one of the following:

  • A simple cervical biopsy, sometimes called a punch biopsy, removes a small piece of tissue from the surface of the cervix.
  • An endocervical biopsy (endocervical curettage) removes tissue from high in the cervical canal by scraping with a sharp instrument.
  • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) uses a thin, low-voltage electrified wire loop to cut out abnormal tissue, or to perform a cone biopsy.

Hi Dr. Gough,

You saved our mom and we will be forever greatful for that.  My mom said that she would one day like to come to Belize to see you in person and to also give her thanks and gratitude!
